Algarve

The Algarve is the most southern region of continental Portugal and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. This rating reduces especially to the southern coastline with the length of approximately 155 kilometers and its few islands and islets. The inland region is rarely recognized by travelers. The biggest town of the Algarve and at the same time the administrative center is the still rather small city of Faro. The coastline is notable for scenic limestone caves and grottoes, particularly around Lagos, which are in some cases only accessible by boat. Also, the Algarve hosts the nature reserve of the Ria Formosa lagoon, which is a stopping place for hundreds of different bird types.
